I came to know Jesus and put my faith in Him at two or three years of age. I cannot remember a time when I didn’t know that He was my Savior. I was raised in a small Brethren church where my family attended monthly missionary meetings. I began to sense a call to world missions sometime in early elementary school. When a member of our congregation joined Africa Inland Mission Air as a pilot I thought that was my calling too, and spent many years expecting to go into missionary aviation. In fact, it wasn’t until my freshman year of college that I realized that God was leading me in other ways. Through getting a degree in music and then in audio engineering I began to see what my passions really were. But the call to missions was always still there.
I used my skills to help plant Oak Pointe Church and was the music and tech director there for four years. After this I used what I had learned there to help others across the U.S. in the church planting process. Still, the call to world missions was nagging at me and even deepening as I saw what God was doing through church planting around the country. In the Fall of 2003 I had to act on God’s call. When I was asked to play at Campus Crusade’s Christmas conference I knew that God would show me what He had for me.
I really didn’t think that my skills and experience were a fit with world missions, so I thought that God would require me to put those aside for the sake of his call. Because we have been to China twice when we adopted our daughters (in fact, we’d returned from our second trip only days before leaving for Christmas conference), I was expecting God to lead us there. So while we were at the conference I looked into ministry opportunities in East Asia but did not get the sense that this was God’s leading. Finally on the last night of the conference—December 31, 2003—I was wandering around the auditorium before sound check and came across a booth for The JESUS Film Project. Immediately, God spoke to me in an almost auditory way, and I knew that this was what I was to do! God would use me, with all of the training that He has led me through and the passions that He placed in me, to have an impact on missions around the world—including China.
